It’s almost summer – that time of year most closely associated with endless fun in the sun. But that shiny friend in the sky could quickly become your enemy if you’re not careful.
Before you overdo it, take a few steps to stay safe and prevent heatstroke so you can let the good times continue this summer.
How do You Know it’s Heatstroke
If you’re about to saunter out into the hot sun, it’s good to know what you’re up against, especially when it comes to our arid Albuquerque summers.
Some signs and symptoms of heatstroke include:
- Flushed skin
- Headache
- Change in mental state or behavior – Confusion, slurred speech, delirium, seizures or coma can occur
- Rapid breathing
- Increased heart rate
- A temperature of 104-degrees Fahrenheit or more
- Nausea and vomiting
- Fainting or unconsciousness
- Dark urine
In children, key signs of heatstroke to look for include fatigue, thirst, dry lips and tongue, and check to see if they feel overheated. And be extra careful about making sure you don’t leave your child in a hot car where children can quickly become overheated, or even worse, die as a result.
Heatstroke requires immediate care, so if you think you or someone you know has heatstroke get to the nearest hospital, especially when a child is experiencing these symptoms.
How to Help Prevent Heatstroke
To avoid getting heatstroke, or if you think you’re starting to overheat, some of the following steps can be taken.
- Try to avoid traveling during the hottest parts of the day.
- Make sure you’re wearing lightweight, loose-fitting clothes.
- Take a cool shower or bath to cool off.
- Get out of the direct sunlight/heat and into air conditioning.
- Keep a cool washcloth on hand.
And stay hydrated…
Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate!
Keeping fluid in your system can be a big help if you’re trying to prevent dehydration and heatstroke.
Be sure you:
- Drink lots of fluids.
- Drink sports drinks or fruit juice to replace electrolytes.
- Avoid caffeine or alcoholic drinks, which can make you lose fluids.
